Gladys Barrett
1953-2025

Passed peacefully away, after a brief but courageous battle with
cancer,
surrounded by her loving family at the Dr. A. A. Miller Center, St. John's on Monday, October 6, 2025,
Gladys Sharon Barrett (nee Avery) aged 72 years.
Predeceased by her parents, John Ingvauld Avery and Jemima Avery (nee Cooper); her brother, Wilson Avery; and her nephew, Robert Avery.
Left with wonderful memories are her husband of 50 years, Lewis Barrett;
children: John (Catherine), Karen (David), and Kristopher (Raina);
grandchildren and step grandchildren: Sibylla, Jameson, Emily, Caroline, Gavin, Naomi, Nyah, Lily, and Madison;
brother, Herman Avery (Mary); special friend, Kim Harris; as well as her extended family and friends.
Gladys was born in Grate's Cove in 1953. While in school she excelled in academics and frequently found herself at the top of her class. She held Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Education. Upon finishing university, she started her teaching career in a two-room schoolhouse in Newman's Cove. When the new Matthew Elementary school in Bonavista was completed, she taught there until her retirement in 2006. For the majority of her career she had the privilege of teaching Kindergarten students, many of whom remember her fondly today. She enjoyed cooking, reading, quilting and crafting and was a big fan of "The Young and the Restless" and "Days of Our lives." Above all else, her greatest passion was being a mother and grandmother and she constantly doted on her children and grandchildren. She always put others before herself and instilled those same values in her family.
The family wish to thank the doctors, nurses and satff at the Health Science Center and the Dr. A. A. Miller Center who provided care to her during her brief illness.
Cremation has taken place.
Visitation at Hopkins' Funeral Home, Old Perlican on Friday, October 10, 2025, 2:00 pm. to 9:00 pm.
Funeral service to take place from St. Andrew's By The Sea United Church, Old Perlican on Saturday, October 11, 2025 at 2:00 pm.
Interment to follow in the United Church Cemetery, Old Perlican.
As an expression of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in Gladys' memory to the Canadian Cancer Society or to a charity of one's choice.
